By now, we all know the benefits of installing VoIP systems. They help save money, have several advanced capabilities unavailable to normal systems, are easy to use, make the mobile workforce easier to manage and so on. SMBs and larger enterprises that choose VoIP for their communications systems are rarely disappointed with the results. However, VoIP is now being implemented in an even bigger, arguably more important, scenario: Taiwan’s military air defense system.

Harris Corporation (News - Alert) was chosen to follow through on this goal. The company’s mission is to “be the best-in-class global provider of mission-critical products, systems and services to both government and commercial customers, combining advanced technology and application knowledge to offer a superior value proposition.” It strives to exceed expectations, demonstrate creative thinking and create happy customers.

That’s why Harris was chosen to provide a next-generation VoIP communication system for Taiwan’s air defense system. Its IP-based Voice Communication System for the 21st Century offering has been selected to help modernize the air defense system, thus reducing Taiwan’s reliance on traditional point-to-point communications platforms.

Harris will install VCS21 systems across several facilities around Taiwan. This will include an initial 140 controller working positions, which will offer users access to radio and telephony sites. The company is excited about this latest development and what it’s capable of achieving, saying, “The Harris VCS21 system now supports air defense operations in Asia along with air traffic management operations in Europe and North America,” said Ed Zoiss, president of Harris’ electronic systems business.

Taiwan’s decision to bring in Harris to improve its military communications systems is an important one that will undoubtedly have some positive consequences. It’s become clear in recent years that VoIP is one of the best and most reliable ways to stay connected, which is something that’s definitely needed when it comes to national security. By bringing in Harris technology, Taiwan has ensured that its air defense system is as reliable as possible.
