Phone.com's Alon Cohen to Discuss HD Voice Progress at ITEXPO

When it comes to telephony, perhaps the only thing as important as price is quality.  What use is cheap phone service if you can’t understand what the other party is saying?  Voice over IP (VoIP) has come a long way in this realm, rivaling, if not exceeding the voice quality of traditional analog voice today.  Combined with its considerable cost savings, it is soon becoming the de facto choice for enterprise and residential voice communications today.

In fact, advances in networking capabilities (e.g. bandwidth, routing, quality of service, etc.) has even allowed for some VoIP carriers to move voice quality beyond traditional narrowband standards. HD voice expands the range of audio frequencies captured and delivered during a telephone conversation, resulting in crisper, more precise audio and more true-to-life highs and lows.  In today’s ultra-fast broadband-enabled world, this makes VoIP even more of a boon.

However, getting that HD voice data from one network to the next has proven to be somewhat of an obstacle.  While intranetwork HD communication has seen success, legacy internetwork connections have resulted in what can be understood as HD voice “islands,” delaying the realization of ubiquitous HD voice.

At the SmartVoice Conference co-located with ITEXPO later this month, Alon Cohen (News - Alert), executive vice president and chief technological office at Phone.com, will discuss precisely what needs to be done to overcome such legacy problems and how to achieve seamless "full voice" calling across and between any network anywhere.  Cohen is a prominent figure in the Voice over IP industry, widely recognized as one of its creators due to his work at VocalTec (News - Alert) Communications, the first company to provide Internet voice technology worldwide, and thus looks to offer particularly poignant insight on this subject.

Joining him will be HP Baumeister of Fraunhofer USA and David Sauerhaft of Sonus Networks (News - Alert).  Together, the group will discuss the advances made on improving voice quality, what steps need to be taken to move to the next level, the trap of cheap phone, and why enterprises need to put HD voice on their next mobile phone policy.

The session, titled “Voice Quality - The Cornerstone for Smart Voice Services” will take place Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.  Those interested in attending can register for ITEXPO today, which is being held at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami, Fla., from Jan. 28 to 31, 2014.
