It’s not easy defending your intellectual property, especially in the modern technology arena. That said, Straight Path IP Group Inc., a subsidiary of Straight Path Communications Inc., has announced that it has filed patent infringement actions against Bandwidth.com, Inc., Telesphere Networks Ltd., and Vocalocity (News - Alert), Inc.

The actions have been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. In its complaint, Straight Path IP alleges that the three telecommunications providers have infringed upon its patents by selling and utilizing certain Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) products and/or services.

The company has a patent defense programs in place to defend its intellectual property against violations. The company believes that such programs are necessary not only to defend its intellectual property, but also to reduce its current expenditure levels while maintaining very significant upside potential.

Patent violation cases on VoIP technology are not new. In fact, Comcast recently earned a breather when a judge determined that the company was not infringing on a VoIP technology patent held by Caritas Technologies (News - Alert) Inc.

“This announcement regarding actions against VoIP providers follows on the heels of patent infringement actions we filed earlier today with the United States International Trade Commission against certain equipment manufacturers. We intend to vigorously and tenaciously defend our IP across industry verticals, wherever our technology is being used without license. We owe it to our stockholders to prevent infringement of our IP,” said David Jonas, Straight Path IP Group’s chief executive officer.

It seems Straight Path’s patent defense department is working fine. Recently, the company filed patent protection actions against other companies, such as LG, Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Sharp (News - Alert), and Vizio.
