8x8 Adds CPaaS with Wavecell Acquisition

Cloud communications is mounting a campaign toward ubiquity, with the alphabet soup that is the cloud era serving as a big reason why. Growing adoption numbers of UCaaS, CPaaS and CCaaS are creating a firm foundation for this market to take off.


8x8 announced the acquisition of Singapore-based CPaaS provider Wavecell Pte. Ltd. The $125 million cash and stock deal delivers 8X8 an established CPaaS platform with robust revenue, making a logical addition to its stable of cloud communication solutions.

“The market opportunity in CPaaS is growing rapidly, and this acquisition enables us to quickly provide these services to our customers around the world,” said Vik Verma, CEO of 8x8. “8x8 is now the only cloud provider that owns the full, global-scale, cloud-native technology stack offering voice, video, messaging, and contact center delivered both as pre-packaged applications and as enterprise-class APIs. We’re excited to welcome the Wavecell employees to the 8x8 family. We now have a significant market presence in Asia and expect to continue to expand in the region and globally in order to meet evolving customer requirements.”

There are three big takeaways from the acquisition. For starters, 8x8 increases its addressable market to now include CPaaS. Also, it immediately extends global footprint – specifically in the Asia Pacific region. In addition, its global voice and messaging network will see a bit of expansion across the region, as well. Thirdly, 8x8 becomes the only cloud communications provider capable of providing pre-packaged communications, video solutions and pre-packaged contact center in addition to open APIs enabling an enterprise to embed communications into core business processes.

While in school we learn that 8x8 equals 64, in cloud communications, 8x8 delivers limitless results. The cloud communications provider is pushing toward market dominance, and the Wavecell acquisition is a strong step in that direction.
