Common UC Deployment Pitfalls

July 20, 2018

Modernization initiatives are taking place across the technology landscape, but with digital transformation can come headaches, believe it or not. They say don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill, well, when deploying a unified communications system, sometimes a mole hill is all it takes to disrupt a deployment. Sometimes it just takes a realistic perspective.

A common occurrence is companies biting off more than they can chew, meaning many organizations take on a UC deployment project they are not qualified to undertake. Often times it is a lack of IT resources – i.e., data network expertise but little knowledge in voice or vide – that can hinder a deployment. It is helpful to possess partners capable of aiding in consulting throughout the deployment process to ensure best results.

A business can’t expect all employees to be familiar and favor the new UC solution, especially not right away. If the system and its feature set is rolled out in phases, giving team members  a hands on first impression of the power of UC with the dangling carrot of more features to come. Each phase clearly outlined, and each employee educated on the productivity and collaboration benefits the new features will provide. Training is key here, but more important that training is consistent training, as to support each new rollout, shortcut or system “hack” to push productivity.

Let’s get technical for a second here. Many vendors are quick to aid you in your migration to the cloud, but it is important to make sure your network is ready for what’s coming. In addition, the cloud is quick but UCaaS is not instant. Planning and testing is very much so a measure twice, cut once scenario taking months or more. UC performance management tools will offer a platform to perform streamlined testing and reporting throughout the deployment process.

This is simply food for thought as you venture into the deployment process. Just remember, sometimes its something little that can hinder a large deployment, whether it’s people, process or technology so be realistic and do your research.
