VirtualPBX Announces Improvements to Softphone App

VirtualPBX recently announced revisions to its Softphone app that will likely receive a warm reception from its current user base. Support for more devices, network quality displays, and improved security are among the new features that have been added to the software.

San Jose, California-based VirtualPBX.com, Inc. provides hosted PBX services for small and large businesses alike. The updated VirtualPBX Softphone app runs on the Dash unified communications (UC) platform, which has plans for single users, SMBs, and large corporations.

Softphone users can access their VoIP PBX system in different ways. With an Android or Apple smartphone app, they can make calls that show a business phone number on caller ID instead of the smartphone number. It can also be accessed through a PC or Mac desktop application. You can also access the service through a 3G, 4G or WiFi connection.

The latest version of Softphone has added support for speakerphones and headset devices, and can be configured through a new dropdown box. A network health indicator lets users know whether or not they have a quality connection before making a call.

Another important update deals with security. Hackers have demonstrated the ability to eavesdrop on calls, sabotage their quality and performance, compromise service to make free calls, and initiate denial of service attacks. It is a never-ending battle to stay ahead of these attacks and updates to software along with following best security practices are critical to making a successful breach unlikely.

The updates to the latest version of VirtualPBX Softphone are best categorized as evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. Supporting different devices and peripherals, upgrading security, and providing network quality displays are not exactly earth-shattering. The cynic might suggest that VirtualPBX was playing catch-up by adding these new features.

A more optimistic interpretation is that VirtualPBX is simply making small improvements to a service that was pretty good to begin with. The single user version of Softphone offers a rich set of communication features. It is not much more expensive than using the consumer-grade version of Skype and adding fee-based features like a phone number and the ability to receive and make phone calls.

Businesses in different shapes and sizes can use VirtualPBX Softphone, but one thing that stands out about it is that it is a solution that can literally grow with a business that starts with a single person and grows to a large corporation.
