Comcast Business Expands SIP Trunk Availability to Get Better Coverage in Major Markets

Comcast Business announced recently that it had increased the availability of SIP trunks to cover a wider geographic area. Customers in 20 of the top 25 U.S. markets, in a total of 39 states, will be able to access these virtual phone lines.

The decision by Comcast to offer SIP trunking to a larger audience is understandable. Infonetics reported back in October that the market for SIP trunking services would reach $4.4 billion in 2014, a 35 percent increase over 2013. That number is expected to nearly double to $8 billion in 2018.

The report also stated that North America was the largest market for SIP trunking and that while more business adopt SIP, they tend to do so gradually. Instead of ripping out the entire phone system and replacing it all at once, companies are more likely to replace a portion of the phone system at a time.

According to its website, SIP trunking service through Comcast Business offers Caller ID, redirecting to another phone number, calling line identification, international long distance restriction, and inbound toll free service. These features allow a business to protect against toll fraud, ensure business continuity, know where their customers are calling from, and save money on phone service.

Customers using Comcast’s SIP trunks can also enjoy the benefits of a cloud-based PBX system. These systems are more scalable, making it easy to add and remove users as needed. They also spare companies the costs of purchasing and upgrading phone equipment.

At the time this article was written, the Comcast Business SIP trunks page was not yet updated to reflect its expanded coverage. It indicated SIP trunks were available in the states of California and New Jersey along with eight different major U.S. cities.

Although these areas are well populated and likely to be a great source of revenue for Comcast, they are not enough for Comcast to achieve its goal of market share. This expansion shows that Comcast is serious about being a major business communications provider in what is currently a very fragmented market.
