Online Protection Just as Important for Business VoIP, Virtual PBX

Running a business requires good business practices. When it comes to computing, the first priority is to back up your documents, work and other important files. Business is no good if you’re without your contacts, website assets, accounts and banking data. But what about protecting your communications?

VoIP systems and virtual PBXs are vulnerable just like any other device or service connected to the Internet, so it’s important to maintain security with our voice systems in addition to our business assets.

Business VoIP is especially susceptible to fraud because of its inherent relationship to high-speed Internet connections. The Internet offers hackers both an easier point of entry than a traditional landline-based phone as well as the possibility to sell more minutes.

VoIP fraud describes a crime where an individual or organization devises methods to breech hosted PBX security and gain unauthorized access to resources, including the ability to dial long-distance calls through the hosted PBX. Once access is gained, the selling of this information can lead to very large telephone bills, accumulating in a period of days or even hours.

The most effective way of avoiding business VoIP fraud is to ensure you have a secure phone network. What you need is user authentication, access control and suitable encryption. These may involve protection such as a voice firewall. Ideally, the firewall should secure your phone network, monitor it continuously and report on usage.

Business VoIP security is very real and being hacked can be devastating. While protection from business VoIP fraud has improved significantly through the years, the hackers are still out there and they are constantly coming up with new schemes and angles to break-in and wreak havoc.

That is why it is up to businesses and enterprises to protect not only their business assets, but their VoIP systems as well.
