Bharti Airtel Deploys Comverse SMA Router Network

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor

India-based cellular provider Bharti Airtel has deployed a Comverse SMS Router network to optimize network performance, handle short message service (SMS) text messaging traffic, and enable introduction of new and advanced SMS-related services.

Airtel (News - Alert) is an integrated telecom services provider with an aggregate of around 82.6 million customers as of end of October 2008, consisting of 80.19 million mobile customers. In 2006, Airtel first implemented Comverse (News - Alert) SMSCs.

This latest deployment, Comverse said, marks a significant expansion of Comverse’s SMS profile in the company.

“Comverse SMS Router enables Bharti to significantly increase SMS capacity and improve service availability,” said Shayam Mardikar, general manager for VAS at Bharti Airtel (News - Alert).

The solution uses Airtel’s existing SMS infrastructure to provide higher quality of service to our customers, he said, adding that it gives the company ample capacity and flexibility to address future needs.

The rapidly growing mobile market requires new and innovative solutions to cope with extraordinarily high volumes of SMS traffic,” said Urban Gillström, group president for global sales at Comverse.

Gillström said that his company is working together with Airtel to bring to life new concepts and solutions that improve SMS efficiency and provide infrastructure for mobile voting, push content, and other attractive new SMS services.

“We are confident that the SMS Router that has redefined the SMS architecture in India has a major role to play in the mobile world in general,” he added.

Comverse is a provider of software and systems enabling network-based messaging and content value-added services, prepaid, postpaid and converged billing, mobile advertising and IP communications.
