As competition increases, businesses are forced to experiment different marketing models to grab the market opportunities. Toll free numbers allow businesses to connect with their customers in an efficient manner. They also add credibility to business by offering national and international reach to customers free of cost.

Currently there are nearly 40 million toll free numbers in existence. As the demand continues to rise, 800 numbers are getting exhausted. To meet these requirements, FCC (News - Alert) has decided to allot new 844 numbers later this year and earlier next year.

Toll free numbers have multiple uses in sales/marketing activities of an organization. Modern toll free number services also include facilities like text messaging, VoIP calling, virtual extensions, virtual office, and more.

To help businesses adopt proper toll free number strategy, a group of players in the toll free industry is planning to create a dedicated entity to create a healthy toll-free texting ecosystem that can quickly and responsibly bring toll-free texting to the general public.

The goal of this group is to help change the way consumers and businesses think about toll-free numbers -- that they come to realize any toll-free number can be texted. It will focus on addressing all of the challenges associated with text enabling toll-free numbers.

Zipwhip, one of the pioneers of landline and toll-free texting, said the association will help enable a method for provisioning that provides a layer of transparency to the greater texting ecosystem -- including service providers, wireless operators, and other policy organizations -- so that all ecosystem players know who activated the service.

“This approach would ensure that a given toll-free number was correctly activated and that instances of fraudulent use and spam can be managed," said John Lauer, CEO of Zipwhip.

Other participating companies in the group include AlphaTelsys, CTIA (News - Alert): The Wireless Association, Dial800, TEN DIGIT Texting, HeyWire, HyperCube, SAP Mobile Services, TextGen, and Twillo, a wireless operator.

"Our goal with this new association is to make sure that the owners of toll-free numbers are able to fully leverage the most advanced capabilities available in the industry such as messaging,” said William Dudley, group director Global Product Strategy and Solutions, SAP (News - Alert) Mobile Services.

“Text enabling toll-free numbers also sets a convergent groundwork to evolve to a more rich communications experience for all participants,” Dudley added.
