Before we pull the trigger on a big decision, a new purchase or even an agreement to pay for a service rendered, we like to test what we have just paid for or are considering to purchase. For instance, the pre-owned vehicle we’re considering taking home must be test driven to be sure it performs as expected. The glasses ordered must be put on in the shop so adjustments can be made before you walk out the door.

Each of these activities point to testing, an important activity in IT development. In fact, test management is an absolute necessary if a new development is expected to perform as designed in real-world situations. If those situations prove too much for the platform or the technology in play, test management failed to detect problems before the innovation made it to market.

A recent Zephyr blog focused on this topic when it comes to Amazon Web Services (News - Alert), advising companies that they need to be smart when they approach costs and test management systems. For instance, consumers throughout the marketplace are using this platform without even realizing it. The cloud infrastructure supports Reddit, Netflix, Instagram and SoundCloud, to name just a few. With the sheer volume of customers focused on the experience on these platforms, reliability is an absolute.

As to be expected, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has a significant impact on users, but is often unseen. For developers and testers, however, they have a keen insight into the platform. The resources provided through AMS enable the creation of scalable, high-performing applications without the need to implement and update in-house infrastructure.

And through the use of the AWS Marketplace, source code is run efficiently with the use of community-supplied Amazon Machine Images and self-installed EC2 instances. This approach ensures access to maximum reusability, durability and accessibility. The platform is certainly positioned as providing significant productivity gains over doing everything in-house and could lower development costs along the way.

Still, as the cloud continues to be a viable option for those wanting to push their solutions and services, the focus will be on controlling costs in test management. Users want to see the efficacy of the tests in use so they can streamline designs and produce broader savings through easy implementation. While ease-of-use will be important for the customer at large, developers need to know that the options they are making available to the customer base will perform as promised. With test management, they can gain that assurance.
