The opportunity to stay connected on the go is an important addition to today’s workforce. A strong competitive advantage is one where professionals can meet their clients and colleagues in the field, no longer tied to the physical office. The introduction of the mobile phone to the mass audience helped in this transition, while the smartphone enabled the creation of the virtual office.

The smartphone also ushered in the opportunity to launch applications that supported work in the field. Whether the app needs to support document sharing, access to an internal system, document creation or other business-critical tools, the important point is performance. If the app doesn’t work according to expectations and make it easy to accomplish a task on the move, the benefit is lost.

This is where test management has gained in importance where mobile apps are concerned. A recent Zephyr blog post highlighted the need for quality assurance teams to recalibrate their approach to software testing to survive in a mobile app development environment. The market is ever-shifting, with new demands emerging on a nearly daily basis. Given this kind of volatility in the market, developments must remain flexible.

Advancements are a constant addition in the market as users want bigger and better and handset manufacturers are setting the tone for constant improvements. A short shelf-life is common for hardware, form factors and even operating systems. As new technologies emerge, the old have to go by the wayside to make room for the benefits associated with the new platforms. These solutions have to support not only the typical consumer, but also the professional business user seeking to make the sale.

The business application of the mobile app has created a whole new spin on the industry, shifting projections so that the market hits $143 billion by the end of 2016. More organizations have shifted their focus to application development, which also means they should be focused on test management. Why does this matter? Remember the sales professional seeking to close the sale? He is the one that is driving the company’s revenue; if he doesn’t have the tools to get the deal done, revenue suffers.

Likewise, mobile employees are accessing the corporate network through public connections. If the apps they are using are not put through stringent test management processes, any vulnerabilities could provide an in for the hacker waiting for the opportunity. The risk increases when the user is unaware of potentially problematic apps.

The marketplace has gone mobile, a reality that isn’t set to change anytime soon. As such, mobile employees need access to the right tools and applications to support their efforts or the benefits mobile was designed to deliver are quickly negated. Test management helps to keep these benefits on track for realization.
