Mu Dynamics Stresses Importance of Testing IP Services for IPv6

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Are you ready for IPv6? If you hope to have enough web addresses to meet the needs of your clients, your answer should be a resounding, “Yes!” The reality in this web-hungry world, all carriers should be properly testing IP services to ensure they can support both IPv4 and IPv6 services at the same time.

Mu Dynamics, which readily supports testing IP services, announced last month that they offer an innovative approach to testing IPv6 products and services. The company promises that if their solution is chosen for IPv6 testing, customers can reduce the time it takes to complete testing IP services by making it easy to create and execute real-world IPv6 migration testing.

To help promote the idea that it is time to embrace IPv6, Google, Facebook and Yahoo are joining forces. These industry leaders are demonstrating their concern that the Web is soon to run out of addresses on IPv4 and without a migration to IPv6, some users may be left without service or with limited connections at best.

According to this recent Telegraph report, the IPv6 platform will ensure the world does not run out of Web addresses and can continue to support everything users want to be able to do. The problem is that only 0.2 percent of Web users actually have access to this new protocol. Mu Dynamics (News - Alert) is hoping to rapidly change that figure as it continues to promote testing IP services.

This concept – and the lack of IPv6 awareness – is behind the concept of a ‘World IPv6 Day.’ This global campaign is designed to encourage the adoption of the new IPv6 platform and is being led by Vint Cerf, recognized as one of the father’s of the Internet. Cerf and others hope to encourage Web service providers and IT managers to switch from the current IPv4 to IPv6.

On ‘World IPv6 Day,’ Google (News - Alert), along with Facebook, Yahoo and other leading companies, will enable IPv6 on their main websites for 24 hours. Google measurements show that 99.95 percent of Google users will be unaffected by this move.

On the Google Blog, Network Engineer, Lorenzo Colitti, wrote that Google has been an open supporter of moving to IPv6 since early 2008 when it first began offering search over IPv6. Since then, the company has brought IPv6 to YouTube, while also helping ISPs to enable Google over IPv6 by default to their users.

So, why the global focus and the push? The new IPv6 platform offers trillions of new Web addresses; the problem is that modems and routers that only use IPv4 cannot access IPv6 addresses. And, while there is a need to change, consumers do not want to lose access to any part of the web.

According to Mu Dynamics, consumers play a vital role in the standard software and hardware upgrade cycle. Those leading the change to IPv6 hope that the availability of new Web addresses will allow for more connected devices, such as tablet computers, to help create revenue opportunities. At the same time, they hope to make way for more mundane devices to gain access to Web addresses.
