Social Media Is Just One Way to Connect

Social media is a great way to connect with people, share information, and build your brand. It can allow salespeople to elevate their game by positioning themselves as thought leaders and trusted partners. In the process, they build their personal brand.


Some people, who have come to be known as influencers, do a great job using platforms like Facebook (News - Alert), Instagram, and LinkedIn to that extent. But not everybody has that gift – or a true desire to educate and inspire. And that has created a lot of social media noise, making it more difficult for people to get to the information and influencers that are truly meaningful to them.

Rather than providing social media followers with useful information, many companies and individuals simply use social media to promote their own solutions or share uninteresting content. Those that do are going about this social media thing all wrong, says author Gary Vaynerchuk.

What they should be doing instead, he suggests, is putting out a lot of great content. Only after they’ve done that, he explains, are they positioned to ask for your business. “You gotta throw some jabs before you throw your right hook,” says Vaynerchuk, who authored the book “Jab Jab Jab Right Hook”.

So there’s the content approach issue.

On top of that, there’s a growing mistrust of – and perhaps also exhaust from –social media. So use of social media is on the decline.

Facebook, which is perceived as a social platform for old folks, lost 2.8 million U.S. users under 25 in 2017. And the recent #DeleteFacebook movement in light of the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica controversy has only hastened that drive.

So people who want to build their reputations, or sustain established ones, should be sure to post only high quality content at reasonable intervals. Everybody should reassess their social media content strategies with the above tips and trends in mind. And we should all remember that social media is just one way to connect with customers and prospects.
