Tips to Become a Leader in Sales Calls

By Lavanya Rathnam, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Sales calls to unknown people can be nerve-wracking, to say the least. At the same time, it is also an interesting job as the employee gets to speak to different people, cutting across religious, cultural and social lines. To make the most of a sales call job, a caller needs an in-depth knowledge of the product or service being offered, good manners and never-give-up attitude.

Below are some tips to help every sales employee become an expert in the voice-calling industry.

Etiquette:

Telephone etiquette is one of the most essential aspects that should be mastered. While talking to a prospective customer, it’s important to be formal, courteous and nice. Also, one should speak clearly and at a slow pace to put the customer at ease and to build a good rapport.

Listening is Key:

Many sales callers tend to think they are on a monologue spree. Unfortunately, incessant talking is only going to irritate the customer, and eventually lead to poor call quality. A better way is to listen and understand what the customer wants before offering the right suggestion. This habit of listening will go a long way in improving customer satisfaction.

Respect the Customer:

Customer service reps that are in the business of cold calling should be more respectful to customers than other representatives. This respect is important because the call could interrupt the customer when he or she is in the middle of something, so it is always a good idea to ask if this is a good time to talk before proceeding with a detailed description of the product or service. Also, representatives should get to the point at the earliest without taking too much of the customers' time, according to a recent update at FastCompany.com.

In short, a sales call can be a satisfying experience for both the employee and the customer, provided certain basic communication protocols are followed.
