Telemarketing: You Can Only Appreciate the Good When You've Experienced the Bad
By Maria Meyer, Contributing Writer
It is an all too familiar scenario; at the end of long day you’re sitting down to enjoy a relaxing meal with your family and the phone rings. You get up to answer it only to find a slick salesman or a recorded message trying to sell you something you do not need.
This is part of the negative side of the telemarketing industry which can also include scammers. As pointed out in a recent piece on Business2Community.com titled “The Two Sides of Telemarketing (and Why They Matter)”, both sides are needed to form the complete picture of the truth of this industry. The other side of telemarketing is the shift toward business-to-business where the interaction is between businesses instead of between business and consumer.
Unfortunately, the widely known version is the one I described earlier for two reasons.
The first reason is that it comes directly into each of our homes every day. At least in the days before Caller ID, there was no avoiding it since you did not know who was on the other side of the phone. The second reason is that it is the older and original version of telemarketing. Today with the Internet as a business tool, companies can easily access websites and contact information for other companies to contact them to market and /or order needed products directly. If you look at both sides of telemarketing you get the full picture of it being a valuable tool for companies to interact with each other beyond intrusive phone calls received at home.
Basically, you have to look beyond the preconceived ideas of what appears to be a bad concept or business tool to appreciate the good part of it.
