NEBS Report: More Service Providers Investing in Intel Nehalem Architecture

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

(NEBS)
It’s dynamic, scalable and well. And if you’re in the software developer or service provider world and not using it already, just wait until 2010.

We’re referring to Intel’s (News - Alert) ‘Nehalem’ architecture, which is seeing increasing interest from OEMs and other telecom professionals, Jeff Hudgins, vice president of engineering for Canton, Mass.-based NEI, told TMCnet during a recent Podcast interview.

This is happening because software developers, service providers and OEMs have new areas of focus and need architecture to serve a number of purposes.

“There’s a couple of dynamics at play here,” Hudgins told TMCnet. “First is a shift into the ATCA open-standards-based technology.”

This shift is happening within the telco space, with some of the green-field initiatives like 4GE and LTE (News - Alert) rollouts, he added.

The second factor spurring the interest in solutions like Nehelem is a need for lower cost and a reduced space footprint by the service providers.

“Nehalem really is the right architecture for both those reasons,” Hudgins said, adding that there is “a long list of improvements and enhancements” that makes the technology so attractive.

Recently, NEI, Emerson (News - Alert) and Intel hosted a webinar on the top three things that you can do to prepare for the transition to Intel Xeon 5500 series-based servers.
