RnR Market Research Releases Report on Service Delivery Platforms

By Miguel Leiva-Gomez, TMCnet Contributor

The telecom industry has become a dog-eat-dog market, with harsh competition driving away businesses that are slow to implement innovation. Establishing one's place in the market has become increasingly difficult as competition has rapidly upped the ante on what is considered standard, causing many service providers to lose significant profit margins. To keep themselves competitive in the telecom arena, many service providers have sought to change their business models. Google (News - Alert) and Yahoo have remained in the forefront because of their popularity as web-based application providers, inspiring mobile network operators (MNOs) to come up with their own app stores and implement service delivery platforms (SDPs).

As years have passed, the SDP has become more popular, offering a middle ground between telecom operators, service providers, content providers, and end users. SDP allows MNOs to create their own personalized and branded offerings and introduce them to the market in a short amount of time. With this advantage, telecom operators can easily deliver their own offerings through different sections of the network and minimize the complexity involved in deployment of their services. This platform can also become a ferry for legacy systems within a more modern network framework.

A report by MarketsandMarkets, titled “Service Delivery Platform (SDP) Market – Worldwide Forecasts and Analysis (2013-2018),” provides a great amount of detail regarding what the regional and worldwide market will look like for landline and wireless service delivery platform software and services. For example, the report suggests that the global SDP market will grow from its current level of $4.48 billion to $6.94 billion in 2018. While this seems a modest increase, it shows that the service delivery platform won't go anywhere anytime soon. The report also performs an in-depth analysis of each provider and adopter of SDPs, providing complete company profiles and details on how the market will grow and contract over the next five years.
