NFV Enables CSPs to Transform Telecom Platform Deployment

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

Telecom platform deployment experts are constantly looking for new ways to improve service at a lower cost.  Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is one such technology that is enabling communications service providers (CSPs) to transform their networks. It promises to lower equipment costs (capex) by migrating network functions from dedicated hardware appliances to software running on virtual machines on standard servers.

NFV supporters also assure that the technology will reduce operating expenses while helping CSPs to rapidly introduce new services via improved network flexibility and agility. However, to successfully deploy the new technology, CSPs must move beyond their traditional ways of building networks and overcome the inhibitors of politics, regulations and their large bureaucracies.

To fully tap the benefits of NFV, Doyle Research Principal Analyst Lee Doyle offers ten suggestions to the CSPs that have backed NFV standards.

First, Doyle recommends that CSPs jump start the NFV adoption by picking the reference architecture. Second, the CSPs must be willing to try new ways of building the network. Next, he recommends relaxing old telecom specific standards and equipment SLAs. Fourth, buy NFV software from emerging independent software suppliers. Fifth, rethink the traditional CSP (News - Alert) (network vs. IT) organizational structure. Following this, think about how NFV can enable new applications and sources of revenue. Next, tie the NFV transformation to CSP efforts to build new cloud services and enable agile OSS/BSS platforms. Eighth, pick network partners that are fully committed to the NFV vision. Ninth, CSPs must coalesce around common NFV solutions and use cases. Lastly, as the standardization progresses, CSPs must commit significant resources for a successful migration.

While NFV has the ability to transform CSP networks and enable a new competitive environment, the transformation is not going to be quick or easy as it will require significant technological maturity and organizational change in the largest CSPs, asserts Doyle.

Speaking of virtualization, it is a game changing technology that is transforming the way enterprise software is developed, deployed and maintained. UNICOM Engineering believes that virtualization will live up to its promise and deliver far greater flexibility, efficiency and scalability to the telecom world, effectively bringing benefits to the telecom platform that can provide ways to reduce operational costs and drive down capital expenditures while enhancing services.
