Cisco Acquires Cariden Technologies, NEI Deploys Telecom Platforms to Meet Enterprise Communications Requirements

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

(NEBS)

Cisco (News - Alert) Systems recently revealed it will acquire Cariden Technologies for approximately $141 million in cash. The deal should be completed in Q2 of 2013.

Cariden Technologies offers design, network planning and traffic management solutions for telecom platform deployment scenarios. Cariden customers include Deutsche Telecom, SingTel (News - Alert), Swisscom and Verizon. Cariden has been a Cisco partner for some ten years and is a provider for more than 60 networks worldwide.

CRN said that Cariden focuses on capacity planning and management tools for IP/MPLS networks. “Cisco plans to leverage Cariden's technology in its nLight platform for IP and optical convergence, as well as for WAN orchestration. The idea, according to Cisco, is that service providers will be able to make their network infrastructure more programmable and more efficient.”

"The Cariden acquisition reinforces Cisco's commitment to offering service providers the technologies they need to optimize and monetize their networks, and ultimately grow their businesses," Surya Panditi, senior vice president and general manager, Cisco's Service Provider Networking Group, said in a company statement. "Given the widespread convergence of IP and optical networks, Cariden's technology will help carriers more efficiently manage bandwidth, network traffic and intelligence.  This acquisition signals the next phase in Cisco's packet and optical convergence strategy and further strengthens our ability to lead this market transition in networking."

This recent acquisition was prompted by an array of factors  because many telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs) are challenged by the development of and need to support diverse technologies.

“In doing so, they lose precious time, divert valuable resources and deploy solutions that don't live up to their expectations,” a blog post from NEI (News - Alert) stated.

To meet these challenges, NEI has developed a LEAD (Lifecycle Engine for Application Deployment) system. It makes it much easier to get an application to market.

For instance, NEI designs solutions ranging from single platforms to a complete frame of multi-vendor equipment. The telecom platform deployment provider can also support customers who sell hundreds to tens of thousands of platforms each year in addition to powering automated updates, system health monitoring, back-ups and managing deployed appliances.

NEI platforms additionally offer expansion slots and I/O options required for installing high-end telephony boards, multi-core processors and features such as RAID and redundant power. Moreover, it is known for its platforms that meet enterprise requirements for communications and security applications, such as IP PBX (News - Alert) solutions, recording, and VoIP and media gateways. Open-standards platforms meet the needs for appropriate power, cooling, redundancy and expansion requirements.
