Telecom Platform Deployment Experiences New Enhancements

By Jamie Epstein, TMCnet Web Editor

(NEBS)

As telecom carriers and network operators’ alike search for the best telecom platform deployment solutions with the right features and power, the industry continues to grow by leaps and bounds. ATCA, or the Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture, is a relied upon set of guidelines that made its official debut back in 2002 and continues to be relevant for identifying the specific requirements needed for next generation carrier-grade equipment.

NEI (News - Alert), a highly respected telecom platform deployment provider headquartered in Massachusetts, recently penned a blog post that discussed some of the most popular trends now seen within the ATCA space. The post stated, “In particular, the need to manage the increasing traffic and demand for online and data services through dynamic policy management requires a high-density solution. This solution affords carriers the opportunity to track subscribers as they move between cells, analyze applications and usage models with deep packet inspection and analytics on the front end, and provide policy enforcement resource functions deployed in high density ATCA.”

As consumers’ demands for new and bandwidth-intensive applications build, it is important to note that we are seeing more and more integration between cellular services and IP services within IP multimedia subsystems (IMS). Ultimately, this is leading carriers to more closely analyze ways in which to power an optimized portfolio for customers, heavily relying on ATCA to successfully manage the high volumes of data transmitted.

Further, consumers continue to seek as assortment of value-added applications as the days pass, . Luckily, ATCA powers the high degree of both flexibility and scalability into to an enterprise to keep up with client needs and add to these in the not so distant future.

Almost a year ago, NEI sat down for an exclusive interview with TMCnet where the telecom platform expert discussed the 2011 ATCA Summit, noting that the ATCA ecosystem is transitioning to support 40GE solutions. According to predictions, in 2012 various ecosystem partners will be powering building blocks for chassis, switches, single board computers, and packet processing blades, all of which boast 40GE connectivity. Also, newer 14U solutions will soon enter the market with the ability to provide 400W of power and cooling to each slot as compared to the typically 300W available in many high end 12U-13U systems today. Hence, for the first time we are beginning to see manufacturers produce smaller 7U, 6-slot platforms with front-to-rear air flow.

To our readers: have these forecasts in fact become a reality? How will these new trends impact the industry overall?
