Radisys, Partner of Telecom Platform Deployment Provider NEI, Enhances SEG-100

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Radisys Corporation, a provider of embedded wireless infrastructure solutions and partner of telecom platform deployment provider NEI (News - Alert), has just released new features and capabilities that will now be part of its high performance security gateway.

Wi-Fi networks bring cost efficiency by allowing service providers to offload traffic and provide improved connectivity for their customers. However, to ensure that the connection between the carrier's network and a Wi-Fi network is secure, service providers require a dedicated offload solution such as a 3GPP standards-based TTG. The enhanced SEG-100 addresses this requirement and provides the secure solution that carriers need, according to a press release.

The award-winning SEG-100 provides turnkey Tunnel Terminating Gateway (News - Alert) (TTG) and Interworking Wireless LAN (I-WLAN) functionality for network equipment providers, and allows equipment manufacturers to extend deployed infrastructure while simultaneously meeting the evolving requirements for carriers.

The SEG-100 helps network equipment providers reduce the time, cost and risk of TTG in I-WLAN development, Radisys officials added.

Previously, network equipment providers either created their own TTG capabilities or integrated a standalone TTG box into their environment. As a built-in hardware telecom platform deployment appliance module and industry standard ATCA blade, SEG-100 completely eliminates this requirement.

According to Radisys, the SEG-100 is the only turnkey TTG and I-WLAN telecom platform deployment solution that can be easily integrated into any ATCA chassis or network, or a standalone Security Gateway in a scalable ATCA chassis. With this flexibility, equipment providers are able to exploit their installed base, especially if it is ATCA-based.

"Carriers are looking for highly scalable and cost-effective solutions to protect networks and mobile traffic," said Jeff Sharpe, senior product line manager at Radisys, in a statement. "Compared to enterprise-class security offerings, the SEG-100 is a carrier-class solution that supports an industry-best 200,000 concurrent, bidirectional IPSec tunnels running at speeds greater than 10Gbps on a stateful, high availability system, thus enabling lowest cost per subscriber."

I-WLAN, a wireless data access solution, allows data traffic to flow between wireless local area networks (WLANs) and the operator's 3GPP systems. Mobile clients, such as laptops, smartphones and tablets, use the WLAN to access the Internet. Radisys' SEG-100 can allow these clients to access the Internet by providing interworking to an existing general packet radio service (GPRS) backbone.
