Telecom Platform Deployment: OKI Expands Functionality of CenterStage NX3200 Session Border Controller to Meet ATCA Requirements

(NEBS)

OKI (News - Alert), a telecommunications manufacturer in Japan, has increased the capabilities provided by its CenterStage NX3200 session border controller (SBC) for KDDI. In addition, the SBC now measures up to ATCA standards.

AdvancedTCA (News - Alert) or ATCA was initially created to meet the requirements for next- generation carrier grade communications equipment, but now also encompasses applications that are targeted to be used by the military and aeronautics industries as well. These specifications combine the most up-to-date high speed interconnect technologies and next-generation processors, resulting in greatly improved reliability.

Moreover, the new capabilities will allow the SBC to interconnect with other fixed KDDI (News - Alert) VoIP network carriers demanding high quality products. The SBC was first delivered to KDDI in September 2010 in response to the impending depletion of IPv4 addresses.

"NX3200 offers large-scale session control functionality reaching up to a maximum of 40,000 simultaneous connected sessions, capitalizing on ATCA and the CenterStage HAPF platform, as well as an industry-leading availability of 99.9999 percent annual operational rates (OKI-measured value)," said Hidetoshi Saigou, general manager of Info-telecom Systems Division at OKI, in a statement.

Saigou added that the SBC also offers the flexibility needed to accommodate future functional upgrades, including voice/video codec conversion functions, while achieving low-delay, high-speed transmission performance equivalent to wire rates.

OKI will continue to proactively develop and provide technology for next-generation carrier-grade networks in order to meet the increasing demands of telecommunication carriers.

"The NX3200 plays an important role—it maintains the high reliability and quality of KDDI's fixed VoIP network and achieves interconnectivity among carriers," said Toshihiko Yumoto, general manager, network technical development division, technology sector at KDDI.

"As demonstrated by the functionality accommodating existing facilities, we have the highest regard for the NX3200, as a product that satisfies both reliability and expandability requirements. It will contribute to KDDI's VoIP services," Yumoto commented.

Back in September, OKI announced that it succeeded in the development of Japan’s first wireless multi-hop communication system for the new 920 MHz frequency band, which is scheduled to be released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in July 2012. The 920 MHz band offers high signal propagation and considerable promise for wireless communication technologies ideally suited for use in smart communities, smart houses and smart meters.
