Cisco Catalyst 6500 9-Slot NEBS-Compliant Chassis

(NEBS)

Cisco (News - Alert) Systems, a provider of computer–networking equipment, has introduced the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series, a 9-slot Network Equipment Building Standards (NEBS)-compliant chassis.

According to company officials, this product offers: a nine-slot chassis with line cards that are mounted vertically to allow for an increased level of front-to-back airflow; high scalability, enabling up to 385 mpps with a distributed forwarding infrastructure; Cisco Express Forwarding capabilities as well as switch fabric speeds that increase deployment times; a flexible architecture that has the ability to support three generations of interchangeable modules in a single chassis; the ability to support multiple line cards such as LAN, WAN, metropolitan-area network (MAN), services blades, optical interfaces, and power supply options; increased network options through various fan-tray options; and simple cable management for a majority of cable-intensive configurations.

Additionally, the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series provides users with highly secure, seamlessly integrated services all the way from the wiring closet to the core, and from the data center to the WAN edge.

The 9-slot chassis can be seamlessly integrated with high-performance NEBS applications where performance, IP services and reliability are highly important. The Cisco 6500 system scales LAN connectivity from 10 Mbps to 10 Gigabit Ethernet and WAN connectivity from DS-0 to OC-48/STM-16, incorporates services that include security and content with networks, is fully compatible with the Cisco Supervisor Engine 720, and provides an ultra high level of investment protection for enterprise and service provider networks alike, the company revealed.

In conclusion, this chassis allows enterprises and service providers to deploy the needed network architecture that is crucial in order to succeed in very demanding, high-traffic areas.
