The European Union says consumer phone rates in Ireland are the highest in the EU region and Competitors are calling for nationalization of Eircom, press reports widely report. Broadband Stimulus: Unanticipated Complications for Rural Grantees
Nobody who thinks they might want to apply for funds is going to say this, but the recent National Telecommunications and Information Administration meeting on the broadband stimulus plan essentially amounted to an hour of platitudes and half an hour of officials saying "that's a good question," and "you tell us what you think we should do." It hardly was a confidence inspiring performance.

Fiber to the Farm: More Jobs?
About 57 percent of U.S. farms have Internet access, up about seven percentage points since 2002, and 58 percent of U.S. farms using the Internet now buy high-speed Internet access, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 2002, the Census found that half the farms in the country were connected to the Internet in some way, using either broadband or dial-up services.

Recessions Aren't the End of the World, But They Sure Feel Like It
Technically, according to www.recession.org, it takes two quarters of consecutive decline in Gross Domestic Products to actually have a recession. And, the US Bureau of Economic Analysis only reports that the US economy suffered a 0.5% decline in Gross Domestic Product in the third quarter 2008, while the second quarter grew a respectable 2.6%.

Recession Impact: ARPU
One possible scenario for the telecom industry during the current economic slowdown is that fixed-to-mobile substitution accelerates, as consumers reduce their communications bills by cutting their fixed line in favor of mobile services. With mobile broadband deals now more readily available and affordable, there is potential substitution on the broadband front as well. But Ovum recently polled about 8,000 consumers and found something more nearly in line with historical types of consumer behavior in recessions.

The U.S. wireless data market grew 7.3 percent sequentially in the third quarter 2008 and 37.5 percent year over year to reach $8.8 billion in data services revenues. For first nine months, mobile data revenues of $24.5 billion were equal to the revenues generated for all of 2007.
