Speech recognition is certainly not a new concept. Audiences have been watching the technology emulated in futuristic movies for years. There have even been recent reports that we will soon see houses that can understand our commands and that robots will be a reality in our homes.
So, what is taking so long? The idea of speech recognition, a computer able to ascertain what is being said, is not complex. Implementing the technology to be available to the masses is another issue. There are languages, accents, speed of speech and other variables to be considered when designing the software necessary to recognize speech.
The other aspect to remember is that in speech recognition technology, the computer or device is taking dictation, not really understanding what is being said. As humans, we can listen to someone speak and even if the words are not completely clear, we can usually decipher what the individual is trying to say in order to understand the intended meaning. This capability is lacking in speech recognition technology, although great strides have been made in continuous speech systems which allow the user to speak naturally.
One area where speech technology is of great significance is cell phone use. State governments are reacting to reports of higher risks of accidents due to cell phone use while driving by implementing laws that prohibit the practice unless the cell phone is a hands free device. Manufacturers are responding by looking for ways to provide consumers with not only hands free options, but accurate voice recognition capabilities for full use of all functions.
A recent survey showed that 75 percent of cell phone users would be interested in speech commands that enhance mobile phone features while driving. This would enable users in states where driving while talking on cell phones is illegal to abide by the law and for all users to practice safer driving.
Recent research has indicated that drivers who listen to music and are otherwise engaged in listening activities are much less likely to experience fatigue and fall asleep at the wheel. By providing consumers with products that more easily contribute to the listening and interactive experience, safety while driving could be significantly increased.
New applications are becoming available that will allow users to naturally speak a message they would like to send. Beyond that are voice controlled and speech activated functions for media applications making playlist searching possible while the user never has to take their eyes off the road.
There are even core technology standards to support video that can be integrated into one common platform-- making mobile services such as real estate house walk-through, car selling or business community networking that rely on live, voice and video calling, possible. Consumers utilizing such features can also gain access to customized information as part of personalized consumer services strategies.
The advances in voice recognition technology have been such that not only can the user control the cell phone functions verbally, they will also be able to utilize more of the available features. Manufacturers can position their products to appeal to a wider range of users; consumers can make full use of the available functions without compromising safety; and voice recognition technology companies can gain credibility.
The demand for effective speech recognition in cell phone use is proven to be there and it presents a benefit for all involved.
