Voice Signal to Produce Source Code in Nuance Lawsuit

Stefania Viscusi, TMCnet Assistant Editor

In a press release today, Nuance Communications announced that a court order has been issued for Voice Signal Technologies to provide source code to them in regards to their trade secret misappropriation lawsuit.

The order, which calls for a "complete and unredacted" source code to be presented, was issued by the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts after Nuance (News - Alert) filed a trade secret misappropriation and patent infringement lawsuit against Voice One Technologies on Feb 23, 2004.

Nuance is asking that Voice Signal pay for monetary damages and also seeks injunctive relief which they believe will halt Voice Signal from continuing to infringe on the US patent "Speech Recognition System for Electronic Switches in Non-Wireline Communications Network" No.6, 501,966.

Nuance claims that Voice Signal used and "misappropriated" information and trade secrets relating to their speech recognition technologies-- which have given them market advantage in the embedded speech products market. Nuance is also claiming that Voice Signal infringes on a patent held by Nuance that includes voice-activated dialing for mobile phones.

The source code was ordered to be presented to Nuance's designated counsel and a neutral expert.
