Nuance & Bury Partner to Develop a Speech-Enabled, Hands-Free Mobile Solution for Cars

Stefania Viscusi, TMCnet Assistant Editor

Nuance Communications, provider of speech recognition and imaging solutions announced today a joint partnership with manufacturer of hands-free car kits and navigation systems, Bury GmBH & Co KG, to create a speech-enabled, hands-free mobile solution for the automotive market.

Unlike the features offered by most speech-enabled phones, the system does not need to first be trained by a user specific voice to recognize commands. Because it is a 'speaker-independent' solution with accurate speech feedback, there is also no need to press a button or look over at the screen to verify the sending or receiving of calls or SMS messages.

Utilizing Nuance's VoCon 3200 speech recognition solution-- capable of accuracy in noisy environments and which supports 18 languages-- the new system allows the driver to simply speak their intended action-- for example the name of a contact-- and the system will recognize and read back the choice in a natural sounding voice before going ahead and initiating the call.

Nuance's text-to-speech solution, RealSpeak Solo 4.0, was also used in developing the new system. The solution provides voice quality output, abbreviation and foreign word recognition and is avalibale in a variety of different voices and in 22 different languages. The incorporation of this into the new system gives drivers the ability to have messages read back to them or to simply speak a message they'd like to send. The system will even alert a driver when message has arrived.

Together, the partnership seeks to develop a natural way of using one's voice for calling and SMS messaging to eliminate the need to take their eyes off the road or hands off the steering wheel at any moment while driving.

Peter Hauser, general manager and senior vice president, Nuance (News - Alert) International commented in a new release: "Given the strict legislation in most countries, hands-free car kits are indispensable for using the phone in the car. We are very pleased with this joint project with Bury and we are now looking to offer the solution more widely to the automotive sector."

According the news release the partnership has already secured its first contract with one of Europe's leading luxury car manufacturers.
