In an announcement made today, MobileVoiceControl, a provider of speech products for the mobile industry and recently acquired by Nuance (News - Alert) Communications, has made available their Narrator service for BlackBerry Pearl smartphones.

 

The Narrator service is available today for $19.99, for a one-year subscription, and provides users with a solution that reads aloud their emails via the smartphones speaker.

 

With the Narrator, BlackBerry (News - Alert) Pearl users will benefit not only from increased productivity levels, as they can continue on with a task, uninterrupted and more efficiently receive their messages while on the go but also, spoken notifications provide enhanced safety features. Narrator on the BlackBerry can also be used for a hands-free, eyes-free, in-vehicle experience that makes traveling much safer.

 

Adding speech to mobile communications is the latest push in making mobile applications more efficient by increasing usability of applications.

 

Currently, the Narrator is available in English only, however the company notes plans to roll out additional language support in early 2007.

 

Nuance announced an agreement to acquire MobileVoiceControl earlier this month—a move that would better positions the company in the speech-enabled solutions for wireless and specifically mobile search and communications markets.
