Nuance Provides Speech Technology for klickTel Navigator

By Stefania Viscusi, TMCnet Assistant Editor

The demand for safety with in-car navigation systems is on the rise. Adding speech to these systems is a key to making them safer. These were the findings from a survey conducted by Nuance Communications.

In yesterday's news, Nuance (News - Alert) announced that when it came to in-car electronics and communications systems, respondents were in favor of adding speech for safety and efficiency. When it came to navigation systems, respondents said a system that provided read out of detailed street directions would serve to increase safety while driving.

Today, klickTel AG, provider of inter-media yellow and white pages announced they have chosen Nuance to provide their RealSpeak text-to-speech technology for all klickTel Navigator models.

By adding text-to-speech to the navigation systems, drivers can focus on what is most important while driving—the road in front of them. Having a natural sounding voice speaking to the driver regarding directions or traffic information will cause less distraction.

These options will be available on the klickTel Navigator K600 series, launching at the beginning of 2007.

Other areas where speech will improve the driver experience include information on upcoming speed limits, speed cameras and dangerous road areas. The navigation system will also include TTS in German, Dutch, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Turkish.

According to a news release, the Navigator K600 series works with Nuance's PromptSculptor, a fine-tuning tool for voice that provides the ability to update the system without having to use the same voice talent.

"The klickTel Navigator provides an innovative security assistant whose functions are enhanced by Nuance's speech technology. With RealSpeak, our solution supports drivers to reach their destination safely by delivering clear and detailed spoken instructions and safety related alerts," commented Boris Polenske, CEO, klickTel in a statement to the press.

While the inclusion of speech technologies plays an important role in advancing call centers for the future, especially important in the modern call center is the shift to IP communications. For in-depth educational sessions and an exhibit hall on IP Call Center solutions, be sure to attend the Call Center 2.0 Conference collocated at this years INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & Expo, WEST, October 10-13, 2006, in San Diego.
