Software monetization is a hot topic for developers. In order to increase the profitability of intellectual property, organizations can employ a few different methods, ranging from sophisticated anti-piracy and IP protection techniques to creative pricing and packaging strategies.

There are many ways to offer software licenses, and licensing is a critical tool for helping your customers budget for services in the way that works for their business, but is also profitable for yours.

Here are some statistics:

According to The Software Alliance Global Software Survey, 43 percent of the software installed on personal computers globally in 2013 was not properly licensed, and the global rate at which PC software was installed without proper licensing rose from 42 percent in 2011 to 43 percent in 2013. These trends put a damper on the bottom line, but the modernization of IP laws, along with more stringent enforcement have been important steps towards thwarting piracy.

Another way to ensure protection and to offer better revenue streams is software virtualization. Many software companies use a hybrid approach to deliver software, running a SaaS (News - Alert) service and delivering the same application on-premises. Next-generation software monetization is not limited to licensing, but is about growth and enabling new business models.

There has been consistent development of virtualization technology and capabilities for quite some time. The resulting intersection of increased functionality of virtualization software has helped virtualization break through, and developers can capitalize on this shift.

Software licensing can be complicated in a virtualized environment, but experts can help you fully understand the ramifications of running applications in a virtual environment.

Software licensing is a complicated issue. There are many challenges associated with this topic, and it is up to the IT professionals to address these challenges and be cognizant of their role in keeping businesses compliant, including software virtualization.

Randy Littleson, senior vice president of marketing for Flexera Software discusses how developers can limit revenue loss in a virtual environment, and how to make virtualization another avenue for bringing revenue in.
