How Software Licensing Can Help You Grow Your Business

Growth – it’s something most businesses strive to achieve, yet can be lingering out of reach when the right processes are lacking. Even when you try to optimize workflows and put efficiency measures in place, there are still variables beyond your control that can either help or hinder. In the world of software licensing, it’s not impossible; it just has the tendency to be more challenging.

According to Flexera Software, there are ways to turn these challenges into opportunities for software producers. The software licensing experts recently posted a blog on the four key software monetization process areas that must be mastered if you want to grow your business. Highlighting a recent white paper, the blog focuses on the overall goal of monetization success so you can improve the bottom line and drive the growth you want over time.

To that end, Flexera suggests you focus on increased product adoption and differentiation; that you strive to gain transparency on the products associated with different clients; that you aim to electronically deliver your software updates; and that you gain insights into how products are currently being used. When these processes are in place and not yet fully mature or utilized to their full capacity, there are other risks you assume.

For instance, if your focus is not on proper software licensing, it will be a struggle to configure new product offerings as quickly as the market demands. You run the risk of your products being overused and overexposed to security threats. Proper entitlement management helps you to optimize cross-sell and up-sell opportunities as you can mine the installed base for information. You’ll also increase support costs as customers lack the visibility they need for self-service initiatives.

The automatic distribution of updates through software delivery eliminates thousands (if not more) in shipping, and eliminates the download and update chores on the customer end. These manual steps can significant cut into your profitability and you may be forced to limit development due to these cost constraints, hurting your competitive positioning. With in-product analytics, you avoid making product decisions on best guesses and instead focus on empirical data to drive your next steps.

Like any other industry, you need accurate information to make decisions moving forward. As a software producer, you’re in a competitive field with a lot of moving parts. Not all variables are within your control, which can make profitability a challenge. When striving for monetization, the four areas outlined here are changes you can make internally so that ongoing revenue and sustainable profitability are within reach as you continue to grow your business.
