Geoimaging software developer, PCI (News - Alert) Geomatics, announced that Northeastern University will become a member of its “PCI Geomatics Education Alliance Program,” which offers software licensing in return for academic research results and feedback. The Education Alliance Program teams the company with universities and research centers to foster information exchange and collaboration.

The agreement stipulates that PCI will provide software licenses allowing Northeastern University students and researchers to use its software to support their ongoing research programs. In exchange, PCI will receive information about research conducted with its software. The agreement will extend tools like PCI’s Geomatica, an application used in remote sensing and digital image processing, to Northeastern’s graduate students.

“We are pleased to have been selected to participate in PCI’s Education Alliance Program,” said Dr. Cordula Robinson, Academic Specialist in the College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University, in a press release.

Robinson added that in addition to solutions like Geomatica, PCI will offer other research tools that can be customized for individual research efforts. Additional PCI solutions will be deployed for use with the university’s online educational programs.

The company notes that the Educational Alliance Program creates a mutually beneficial arrangement between the company and its educational partners, supporting the education sector and highlighting work done with PCI software.

“PCI greatly values the contributions of Universities and other educational institutions to advance our collective knowledge of remote sensing science and applications,” said Brad Schmidt, vice president of sales and marketing, PCI Geomatics, in the release.

PCI Geomatics has plans to extend the Educational Alliance Program to research and high educational institutions around the world. In addition to Geomatica, the program offers licenses for PCI software solutions that provide integrated ESRI (News - Alert) imagery workflows, standalone image processing capability, and the production of high-quality image products and derived information.

PCI recently announced that it was the co-recipient of the Synergy (News - Alert) Award for Innovation for 2011, along with the University of New Brunswick. The Synergy awards honor outstanding achievements of university-industry collaboration in the natural sciences and engineering.
