Protecode, a company that provides open source software licensing and copyright management, has completed "Ready for IBM (News - Alert) Rational Software" technical validation for its Build Analyzer, a component of Protecode's System 4 complete license management solution.

Build Analyzer integrates with Rational Team Concert to provide IBM Rational development teams with an efficient, user-friendly and automated tool for managing open source and third party code throughout the increasingly collaborative software development cycle enabled by the Rational Collaborative Lifecycle Management Solution (CLM), according to company officials.

"Development teams are evolving into workgroups. They are becoming more decentralized and use multiple platforms,” said Kamal Hassin, vice president of product management at Protecode (News - Alert), said in a statement. “Protecode Build Analyzer software license management capabilities, coupled with collaborative capabilities of Rational Team Concert now allows development teams to easily confirm compliance to open source licensing obligations before shipping their products.”

Through its work with IBM Rational Team Concert, Build Analyzer promises that unwanted open source or other third party codes will not be included in products that are shipped to customers. Build Analyzer monitors the build process tool, such as Apache's Ant, and creates a list of files that are used during the build (after the pre-processing stage). It then analyzes the files that are used in the build process, according to company officials.

"Compliance with open source licensing obligations is becoming increasingly important across industries," said Mike Loria, vice president of IBM Rational Business Development. "The Protecode Build Analyzer extends the processes of Rational Collaborative Lifecycle Management to include License management, which is an integral part of software and systems development."

In related news, CPU Tech, a leading provider of anti-tamper processor solutions for the military, government and commercial sectors, ran into a challenge a few months ago when it was looking to reduce its high manufacturing costs and address its customers’ wishes to license and pay for use of CPU Tech’s desktop and embedded software based on usage of features/functions and specific roles.

The company found its answer in Flexera Software, a leading provider of strategic solutions for application usage management. CPU Tech, producer of the Acalis family of secure processors, implemented FlexNet Embedded and FlexNet Operations, components of the FlexNet Producer Suite for High-Tech Manufacturers from Flexera Software, and soon began reaping the benefits.

Flexera Software’s embedded software licensing and entitlement management solution enables CPU Tech to protect our intellectual property and allow the customer to operate in a classified/ secure area without internet access,” Ryan Kenny, product marketer of CPU Tech, said in a recent case study. “We needed a solution that enables a solid revenue model without expanding our manufacturing costs.”
