A media gateway acts as a translation unit between disparate telecommunications networks such as PSTN, next-generation networks, 2G, 2.5G and 3G radio access networks or PBX (News - Alert). Amino Technologies, a provider of IPTV and hybrid/OTT solutions, has secured a significant new contract to provide set-top boxes to an unnamed European telco.
Amino will deploy its Live Media Gateway (News - Alert) platform, a powerful entertainment hub for all media coming into the home with the ability to handle and distribute content from any source to multiple screens, as part of an enhanced offering delivering a range of pay-TV services.
As the media gateway connects different types of networks, one of its main functions is to convert between the different transmission and coding techniques. This device combines the very latest dual core processing power with a range of enhanced transcoding and encoding capabilities, taking raw video and converting it into a high quality format for multiscreen playback.
Capable of handling a range of content sources – including broadcast, OTT, gaming and user generated content – the device also has HD video calling capability. Additionally, the device has a secure Linux environment for the delivery of pay-TV video, and a controlled Android (News - Alert) virtual machine to support a wide range of OTT applications and services.

Donald McGarva, CEO of Amino, said in a statement, "This is a breakthrough contract with a large and growing operator. They recognize that the combination of trusted and secure Aminet pay-TV performance - and a proven global Android apps development environment - offers an exciting new way to secure and grow their customer base with a powerful multiscreen entertainment offering."
The Live Media Gateway platform offers features such as full open Internet and OTT content access, HD video broadcast, full access to Web-based on-demand content and flexible UI frameworks. Another provider of media gateway is REDCOM (News - Alert). REDCOM’s next-generation solutions are powerful multitechnology telecommunications systems ideal for public exchange switching, including end office, tandem office, media gateway and international gateways.
Its gateway solutions, the HDX and SLICE 2100, can be configured as a softswitch, emergency standalone or media gateway. Thanks to the TRANSip architecture, four core elements (call control, media gateway, media gateway control and legacy support) are fully integrated, providing service providers the flexibility and the benefits of a fully interoperable network while retaining valuable network assets.
