LinkedIn Changes Bring More Life to Marketing and Branding

By Tracey E. Schelmetic, TMCnet Contributor

While the term “social networking” generally is code for “Facebook (News - Alert) and Twitter” (and maybe Google+ if that ever manages to stand up on its wobbly legs), many people forget about business networking site LinkedIn (News - Alert). And let's face it...despite the fact that it claims 120 million members and two million company pages, LinkedIn has earned itself a rather dry reputation for being a place to hunt for jobs, network and scout out potential job candidates.

LinkedIn, apparently, would like to change its face a little and offer enterprise marketing departments a little more joie de vivre. The site has announced new changes that will make the social networking site seem a little more like...well, social networking.

If you're the administrator of a company profile on LinkedIn, you can now post real status updates (up to 500 characters) and even links. While you still can't upload photos like you can on Facebook, you can post links to photos.

Those individuals linked to your company profile (your followers) can now see your status updates and even comment on them and share them. These changes (click here for a demonstration), while they may seem small, will ultimately broaden LinkedIn's appeal for marketing and branding.

So there you have it. LinkedIn acting more like social networking and less like a digital job board.

In other LinkedIn news, this week the company announced that it is acquiring hosted search service IndexTank, the search technology behind sites like Reddit.com, Spoke and Blip.tv. LinkedIn plans to gather IndexTank's technology into LinkedIn's existing search algorithms.
