Zynga Going Social

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

Zynga (News - Alert) is taking inspiration from where it spawned its success and going social.

The company that has produced the games many know and love such as FarmVille, CityVille and Words with Friends is coming out with Zynga Direct, an online distribution service that will give Zynga a way to deliver its games to players on mobile and Web-enabled devices.

According to Business Insider, Zynga Direct will still use Facebook (News - Alert) Connect, so it's not as if it's completely ignoring Facebook. At the Zynga Unleashed event today, TechCrunch had the scoop on the platform being launched but finer details are still unknown.

Zynga CEO Mark Pincus confirmed the platform's existence and its name on Twitter. He wrote, "We're going to show Zynga Direct for the first time today. A platform for a direct relationship with consumers."

“It’s a platform for a direct relationship with consumers whether on the Web, or on mobile, to give you a whole sandbox and create socialness about the games and not just within the games,” Zynga chief executive Mark Pincus said.

Live blogging the announcement, AllThingsD wrote that the platform was developed for both mobile and web users.

"We are going to build a whole sandbox around the games and not just in the games," Pincus said, per AllThingsD.

Pincus also said Zynga Direct is the deepest possible integration of Facebook Connect, and made a point of calling Facebook a launch partner of the platform. According to Business Insider, Zynga has to give Facebook a cut of all its virtual goods revenue, and its success is reliant on Facebook.

Zynga also announced the latest to its “ville” franchise of games, CastleVille. CastleVille joins the ranks of FarmVille and FrontierVille, and, much like its counterparts, you have to build stuff. The cool part? You get to build a medieval castle.

Users can craft art and armor and trade, as well as defend their castle from “beasties,” according to Zynga Dallas director Bill Jackson.
