Communications convergence is huge right now; enabling multiple points and forms of communication (ie. voice, video and data) via one device – as the majority of us are now well conditioned to thanks to smart technology – is key today and continue to show room for growth. One breakthrough technology that is leading us in the evolution of communications convergence is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which enables users to connect their communications service over the open Internet, thus simplifying resources needed to quite literally bring the way we communicate together more easily and efficiently.

However, despite all of the clear opportunities in communications convergence technology, obstacles such as limited bandwidth, devices and applications and security keep its untapped possibilities at bay and vulnerabilities exposed. “If you think of it from the standpoint of what most of the industry thinks about convergence – from either legacy to VoIP or mobile to fixed line – you can really take that to the next step with IMS and VoLTE,” Pratt explained at this year’s ITEXPO (News - Alert) Miami 2013, which took place last month. “And a lot of the things we’re doing – the value we provide to our carriers – is having the expertise to evolve the VoIP-type services and functionality into a VoLTE or IMS arena.”

IMS, or IP Multimedia System, offers multimedia and VoIP services based on unified communications (UC). Touted for its unique ability to deliver robust functionality, high availability and multimedia session support, IMS is highly complementary to the advanced converged service networks leaders in the industry are working to establish today for both residential and business voice service use.

Comparable but not exactly similar to VoIP, Voice over LTE (News - Alert), or VoLTE, is touted as being the next generation in wireless calling, as wireless operators worldwide have been deploying it to complement their rollout of LTE networks. As opposed to VoIP, which works over the IP protocol, VoLTE utilizes a data connection through the LTE – or Long Term Evolution – network to communicate and perform tasks, offering a more seamless form of communication for the user on any device and on any network.
