SIP Trunking Deployment to Rise: Report

The market SIP trunking is on the rise, thanks to growing interest in the technology, a new report found. But companies are adopting the service at a slower pace to likely wait for a recovery in the economy.
 
According to Infonetics Research, while T1 lines are still the most commonly used trunking service to connect to the publicly switched telephone network, or PSTN, native VoIP trunks are growing. Some 39 percent of survey respondents have deployed Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert), or SIP trunking, the Enterprise VoIP and Unified Communication Continuous Research Service, survey found.
 
And by 2010, SIP trunking will likely become the second most commonly deployed trunking service. Respondents typically spend between $100,000 and $500,000 a year on trunking services, Infonetics Research (News - Alert) said.
 
Companies that are rolling out SIP trunking across their organizations are not just testing the service at a few sites, the report said.
 
"Many companies have already deployed VoIP internally, but they usually use legacy TDM technologies to connect to the PSTN,” Matthisa Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data at Infonetics Research, said in a statement. “We finally see this changing: SIP trunking is catching up with TDM services and gaining broad traction with buyers, driven by their desire to lower their overall trunking expenditures.”
 
The economy, however, is likely playing in role in the rate of adoption of SIP trunking, which is defined as the use of voice over IP to facilitate the connection of a private branch exchange to the Internet.
 
“It is unlikely we’ll see a rush toward SIP trunking, as SIP trunks are usually implemented during general technology upgrades, which are on hold at many companies right now," Machowinski said.
 
Infonetics Research surveyed 92 North American organizations with 101 or more employees that use PBXs, phone systems, including private branch exchanges and key telephone systems. Companies were asked about their use of PBX (News - Alert) manufacturers, trunking services, providers, and expenditures. The research explored why organizations are deploying SIP trunking and what criteria are used to select SIP trunk service providers, among other facts.
