Veraz MGN Switch Network Helps Excel Telecommunications Reach One Billion Minutes per Month

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

With the help of Veraz’s ControlSwitch, Excel Telecommunications has reached one billion minutes of traffic per month. According to Veraz Networks, Excel achieved this by replacing 18 Nortel (News - Alert) TDM and Alcatel DECs switches with a distributed ControlSwitch.

Network service providers are looking at new ways to assist the unprecedented traffic flow on their client’s network. With downloading the video and large movie becoming commonplace in Internet, the conventional methods of network management simply would not be enough to cater to the modern day demands.

Excel migrated from its 18-switch legacy network over a period of 18 months with the help of ControlSwitch’s programmability. This enabled the company to carry additional traffic on the Veraz infrastructure within 12 weeks. Excel could also include services such as Local Number Portability and Teleblock with ControlSwitch’s open application interfaces and service brokering capabilities.

“Rapid deployment of the ControlSwitch into a complex IN service infrastructure enabled us to quickly decommission and migrate traffic,” said Richard Dinh, senior vice president of operations of Excel Telecommunications (News - Alert). “We were also able to preserve investment in the applications from our legacy network and open up new IP-based service opportunities due to the ControlSwitch’s ability to interface with mixed IP and legacy network architectures.”

ControlSwitch provides an easy opportunity to migrate traffic from an existing legacy infrastructure, especially for operators with large legacy networks. All the softswitch can be managed centrally with ControlSwitch’s distributed architecture and reduce costs. The clients can also get a single view of the entire network for simplified network management and optimized vendor management.

Last June, Excel provided full interoperability services to Grandstream Networks, a manufacturer of high quality and affordable IP PBXs, SIP trunking gateways and IP voice and video solutions for the worldwide VoIP SMB market.

Excel feels that by combining Grandstream’s equipment and pricing with Excel’s new IP PBX (News - Alert) Replacement Program, implementing a VoIP solution becomes affordable for new and existing businesses.
