Excel Introduces its Latest SIP Trunking Solution, SIPpbx

By Michelle Robart, TMCnet Editor

Excel Telecommunications (News - Alert), an innovative facilities-based IP provider of traditional and next-generation communications products and services, today introduced its latest SIP Trunking solution, SIPpbx, which incorporates Voice Paths On-Demand.

Today, businesses are increasingly looking into IP PBX’s (News - Alert) and unified communications to improve their employee productivity and their customer service. One of Excel’s latest customers, a well-known real estate agency, was looking for a way to better service their realtors. What the agency needed was a new phone system with unified communications integrating the office, home office, cell phone and voicemail into a one telephone number solution.

In an effort to enhance its network and keep up with technology, the agency deployed an IP PBX. With the new solution, realtors improved their productivity and simplified their accessibility to home buyers and sellers by having one phone number and one voicemail on-the-go.

The agency realized that with the new system, traditional TDM PSTN lines would need to be upgraded to support the unified application. In the past, someone would call the agency’s office line then try the agent at home or their cell. Under the new IP PBX scenario, they call the agent’s office number and the PBX simultaneously calls their cell phone and home office. This required either doubling the number of phone lines or a more efficient solution like SIP Trunking.

Another dilemma for the real estate agency was that most SIP Trunking providers bill their customers based on the number of phone lines they have, not by the number they actually use. This penalizes the simultaneous calling activity as the extra voice paths were required for a few seconds to find the agent or for a few hours on the weekend during peak periods.

What Excel’s Voice Paths On-Demand, phone lines are only there when needed and therefore, users only pay for the voice lines when they are in use. In addition, the voice lines that simultaneously call multiple devices, like an agent’s cell phone and home phone, are only billable on answer supervision (call completion). This means that only one call is billed and the failed calls to the home office or cell phone were not completed and therefore, are not billed.

The following is an illustration of the before and after showing the benefits of Virtual Voice Paths On-Demand and compression:

The bottom line was that the agency was able to improve productivity with unified communications without doubling their phone lines’ cost. Because the agency was with an incumbent carrier for legacy POT’s lines and a separate service provider for data T1 lines, Excel’s integrated voice and data SIP Trunking solution was less than the customers existing total communications bill.

With Excel’s innovative approach, the agency was able to improve productivity and reduce costs. Other benefits included uncompromised voice quality with managed private T1 data network, and faster data speeds with state of the art compression.

Steve Weltner, director of Excel product marketing, explained, “This is a classic unified communication application where the customer and PBX vendor had the solution and we only needed to change our SIP Trunking packaging to provide Voice Paths On-Demand. I would compare upgrading to unified communications without considering virtual voice paths to buying a Ferrari and trying to drive it on a gravel road. Our new SIPpbx solution was designed and packaged to be the Autobahn.”
