Sagemcom Achieves CAT-iq 2.0 DECT Certification for the US Market

By Blaise McNamee, Web Editor

While Sagemcom (News - Alert) is a well-known provider of fax over IP solutions, namely its XMediusFAX series, by no means does its technical expertise end there.  In addition to enterprise printing and fax services, the French technology company is also a major player in the image and sound, energy, IP telephony and unified communications markets.  Indeed, Sagemcom put this expertise on display at CES (News - Alert) 2014 today, announcing that it has become the first global company to obtain CAT-iq 2.0 certification for the American market, allowing it to offer enhanced DECT (News - Alert) phones to the U.S. market.

CAT-iq 2.0 is a quality and interoperability standard created by the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) Forum, a not-for-profit industry standards organization aiming to facilitate and support a “collaborative environment of the DECT industry and drive programs to develop and improve DECT wireless technology in order to exceed wireless communications expectations and meet the needs of a technology-shifting world.” DECT itself refers to the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) standard for short-range cordless communications, commonly used in residential and small office cordless phone systems, enabling wireless voice and data communication between handsets, base stations, and voice over IP (VoIP) gateways over unlicensed frequencies.

Essentially, CAT-iq certification is a quality mark indicating that the technology has successfully completed interoperability and performance testing (examining factors such as audio quality, RF interface compliance, and protocol correctness) and meets a mandatory level of design quality to ensure a consistent user experience across all users and market stakeholders.  The 2.0 designation, meanwhile, simply refers to the multi-line category of certification parameters. Sagemcom’s DECT phones are therefore certified interoperable with any DECT/CAT-iq 2.0 base stations, handsets, or gateways, guaranteeing feature reliability and performance.

Due to a variety of FCC (News - Alert) spectrum restrictions, however, DECT and CAT-iq adoption had been delayed in the United States, despite being widely used in Europe and Australia, as well as in some parts of Asia and South America.  Adjustments to strict radio frequency regulations, however, have opened the door for this technology standard in North America, allowing Sagemcom to thus become the first to propose CAT-iq 2.0-certified DECT phones in the U.S. market. (Interestingly, the company also announced that it will be the first manufacturer to propose, on the European market, cordless residential telephones with HD Voice certification from the GSMA (News - Alert)).

This certification looks to allow the company to make major headway in the U.S. residential VoIP segment, putting it in “pole position” to offer American consumers the latest in DECT HD voice and digital communication solutions.  Sagemcom’s D68HD DECT phone, for example, currently incorporates this new technological standard and features HD voice, second-call management, smart phonebook, and other digital features valued by residential consumers.  Moreover, the cordless phone includes a “high-design” base, which can be activated from any compatible residential gateway.

Thus, it seems that Sagemcom certainly has a grip on digital communications.  Whether it’s IP Fax, powerline communication, or cordless home telephony, consumers can be confident that the company has done its homework and has created a product that meets or exceeds current industry standards.
