MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) is a global technology standard for home entertainment networking and is the only standard of its kind in use by all three pay TV segments: cable, satellite and IPTV (News - Alert). Currently, there are 118 MoCA-certified products and over 54 members of the alliance, while ABI Research expects the number of MoCA households in North America to surpass 25 million by 2014.
It's no surprise, then, that MoCA recently added another high-profile member, international set top box and broadband gateway vendor Sagemcom (News - Alert), to its ranks.
"Integrating MoCA into our products will enable service providers to deliver a highly reliable in-home backbone for extending and enhancing existing Wi-Fi networks and providing the Quality of Experience that consumers have come to expect," said Ahmed Selmani, deputy CEO of Sagemcom Broadband, in a statement. "With a MoCA-based network, consumers can move an ever-expanding range of media content around the home quickly and easily."
Sagemcom is also involved in other industries, such as telecom and energy, and is a major player in advanced fax server solutions for IP networks. Its XMediusFAX solution, in particular, is extremely popular to the point that the company recently launched a new partner program for the solution. This refreshed partner program is meant to accelerate channel partners' sale revenue and profits.
For MoCA president Charles Cerino, though, it's Sagemcom's "strong heritage in in-home Triple Play (News - Alert) distribution," as well as its presence in EMEA, South America and North America, that make the company a "natural fit" for the alliance.
MoCA technology supports multiple streams of video content — HDTV, 3D, gaming, OTT — with an IP-over-coax connection to various in-home devices, such as HDTVs, game consoles and PCs. The current MoCA specification is able to deliver up to 175 Mbps net throughput, while offering an unparalleled user experience by way of parameterized quality of service (PQoS).
