Sierra Wireless Buys Sagemcom's Machine-to-Machine Business

Sierra Wireless (News - Alert), a provider of mobile computing and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications products, has bought Sagemcom M2M Business for $54.8 million, along with the assumed liabilities that ensure all of Sagemcom’s M2M Business assets belong to Sierra Wireless.
Sierra Wireless is said to have completed the acquisition process, and since August 1, 2012, the M2M solutions of Sagemcom has joined Sierra Wireless. The addition of Sagemcom’s M2M Business will enable Sierra Wireless to have a significantly enhanced market position in key segments, including payment, transportation and railways, as well as new geographical expansion into Brazil.
The M2M business is a core growth component for Sagemcom benefiting from strong experience in telecommunications and mass market devices. With its GPRS, EDGE and 3G module ranges, Sagemcom delivered solutions to the main M2M markets including automotive, smart metering, payment terminals, alarm and security.
Sierra Wireless acknowledged that the wide range of products, offering differentiated features and competitive pricing, combined with outstanding technical support and development services, make Sagemcom M2M products the first choice of many customers around the world. The Sagemcom M2M Business, now part of Sierra Wireless, includes 2G and 3G embedded cellular modules and mobile terminals for GSM-R deployments, specifically designed for harsh operating conditions.
Officials with Sierra Wireless commented that combining Sagemcom’s M2M business with Sierra Wireless is a unique opportunity for them to enter new markets and bolster their leadership in wireless M2M communications. With a strong market position in key segments, a culture of innovation and experienced teams based in Paris and Shenzhen, Sagemcom M2M is purported to be an ideal fit for Sierra Wireless.
In related news, Sierra Wireless has announced the availability of 4G LTE Gateway for the AT&T (News - Alert) network and Audi selected Sierra Wireless for testing LTE (News - Alert) based connected services.
