Sagemcom Focuses on Interoperability, Certification for XMediusFAX Release 7

By Rich Steeves, TMCnet Managing Editor

Gone are the days when the term “fax” was associated with a separate piece of hardware that probably stood next to the coffee machine in your office workroom. In today’s modern age, IP fax is an infrastructure play, sitting at the intersection of unified communications (UC), enterprise content management (ECM), and enterprise resource management (ERP). Nowadays, fax servers are more complex and are in the guts of IT rather than at the edge.

Now, in the IP fax space there are two different types of business models. One type relies on leveraging third-party solutions for the critical IP fax transport SW stack.  Nearly 90 percent of the market for these third-party solutions is dominated by a single manufacturer, so companies that rely on this approach do not have control over their own destiny and therefore increase their business risk.

On the other side of this business model spectrum is Sagemcom, which prides itself in being a vertically integrated company. Sagemcom owns and develops its own IP fax transport SW stack and this provides a wide spectrum of advantages.  In particular, the XMediusFAX, T.38 fax over IP SW server solution features: higher channels capacity, a single license, simple operations and tech support, improved responsiveness and complete “futures” control.

In its role as a vertically integrated provider, Sagemcom is invested in interoperability and certification as key differentiators. Interoperability means that technologies can work together, while certification is formalized and typically granted by a third party. In terms of strategy, Sagemcom mixes its interoperability and certification as it makes sense, seeking certification with core partners, with an awareness that certification testing is not available in all cases. Sagemcom has its own interoperability and certification program that focuses on interoperability with gateways, certification with core partners, infrastructure and MFP connectors, and both interoperability and certification with SIP trunking providers.

Sagemcom has a growing list of independently certified telecom/IT/and ECM platforms. It is a Gold Certified partner with Microsoft (News - Alert) and is certified with other core UC partners, including Cisco, ALU and Avaya. It also has strategic partnerships with Audiocodes and Dialogic (re: gateways). In terms of SIP trunking, Sagemcom is certified with Global Crossing, BabyTEL (News - Alert), and Iristel and is working with AT&T and is in the testing phase with Verizon.  In addition, the FoIP working task group of the SIP Forum has proved to be an interoperability anchor, promoting heterogeneous networks with independent vendors. XMediusFAX also has a long history of interoperability with key virtualization platforms such as VMware Citrix, and Hyper-V and has achieved certification with industry leading ECM providers (e.g., Xerox, Ricoh (News - Alert)).

This focus on interoperability and certification marks a commitment by Sagemcom to being a vertically integrated provider, allowing it to control its own destiny and thus provide highly value added solutions to its customers. As Release 7 of its XMediusFAX software draws near, customers can be confident that this IP fax solution will be well situated in that sweet spot at the intersection of UC, ECM and ERM – the future of IP fax is nearly here.
