The National Institute of Standards and Technology defines the Federal Information Processing Standard (140-2) or FIPS 140-2 as one that “specifies the security requirements that will be satisfied by a cryptographic module, providing four increasing, qualitative levels intended to cover a wide range of potential applications and environments.” For SD-WAN providers and their end users, passing this bar means peace of mind.

Today, Silver Peak announced that the Unity EdgeConnect SD-WAN platform completed FIPS 140-2 validation testing, Advanced Data Security conducted the validation testing for the EdgeConnect extra-small, medium and extra-large SD-WAN edge appliances.

“Successfully completing FIPS 140-2 validation testing from NIST marks a significant milestone for Silver Peak (News - Alert) and the Unity EdgeConnect SD-WAN edge platform,” noted Anusha Vaidyanathan director of product management and security at Silver Peak.

Once Advanced Data Security deemed the Silver Peak SD-WAN appliances FIPS 140-2 compliance, the EdgeConnect devices require validation by the CMVP . Once completed, the EdgeConnect solutions can be leveraged by federal government agencies and other organizations with strict data security standards.

“We value the opportunity to work with Silver Peak on performing FIPS 140-2 testing of the Silver Peak Unity EdgeConnect SD-WAN edge platform," said Eugene Polulyakh, general manager at Advanced Data Security. “The laboratory FIPS 140-2 testing of the products was completed successfully, subject to validation by the cryptographic module validation program (CMVP). The FIPS 140-2 testing includes analysis of the security architecture, as well as analysis and testing of the cryptographic algorithms implemented by the products to verify compliance with advanced cryptographic standards. The FIPS 140-2 testing of the EdgeConnect platform is a significant step in improving SD-WAN edge infrastructure security.”

We know SD-WAN is on the rise, and a key ingredient to this transformational technology’s success is standards. From the work taking place at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, to the standards and frameworks developed by MEF, this work delivers a foundation for this boundless technology.
