Much like a child learning to crawl, walk then run, watching a technology mature is an exciting time. SD-WAN is breaking into a full stride, with adoption ascending and attention at a high this transformational technology is truly taking flight – and industry analysts are taking note.

This week, Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group unveiled the results of its inaugural SD-WAN market share report, illustrating 64 percent growth in the space, placing market value at over 1$ billion for 2019.

The Dell’Oro Group report put a spotlight on Fortinet, VMware, Versa, Cisco and Silver Peak, explaining these five vendors represent nearly 60 percent of market share revenue.

"SD-WAN had a breakout year in 2019. The market moved beyond the early adopter phase, and we observed that vendors with larger installed bases gained the critical mass needed for sustained revenue growth," said Shin Umeda, Vice President at Dell'Oro Group. "This is a highly competitive market and with no vendor taking more than 20 percent market share, and we expect an ongoing market share battle in the coming years," added Umeda.

In July, IDC projected the SD-WAN infrastructure market would surpass $5 billion by 2023, with market leadership looking much like Dell’Oro’s list including Cisco (News - Alert), VMware, Silver Peak and Nokia-Nuage. If the IDC forecast holds true we will see a CAGR through 2023 of nearly 31 percent.

From MEF developing standards and driving the push toward training, certification, interoperability and reaching the potential projections of the digital age, to the feverish innovation taking place across the space, the future is bright for this quickly maturing technology.
