Truphone to Develop Mobile VoIP App for BlackBerry 10, Reduce Roaming Costs

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Voice over IP (VoIP) provider and mobile app developer Truphone (News - Alert) today announced its intentions to develop a global roaming application for Research In Motion's recently announced BlackBerry (News - Alert) 10 platform. The app would allow BlacBerry 10 users to make international calls and send text messages over any wifi or 4G/LTE connection with rates up to 90 percent cheaper than usual roaming rates.

RIM ensured that BlackBerry 10 would be easy to develop for with advanced APIs, new programming tools, an overhauled programming environment and a number of helpful developer features. As such, Truphone will be able to reduce development time for the app as well as create unique, powerful applications for the platform. Truphone hopes to therefore provide a superior product in terms of user experience, quality and reliability.

Truphone Head of Labs and Mobile Applications Adam Linford said of RIM's newest mobile OS: "RIM has got it right with the BlackBerry 10 platform. They have really streamlined the app-development process. The platform's support for open-source components flattens the learning curve enabling us to build a new application quickly and cost-effectively and have it ready to go when the first BlackBerry 10 devices debut."

He added, "Truphone's BlackBerry 10 application will be the product of two things: Our leadership in being first to market on new platforms, and RIM's visionary approach in developing a platform that's developer-friendly. Our new BlackBerry solution will debut at a time when Wi-Fi offloading and other OTT services begin to reach the tipping point to become the business traveler's must-have options for reliable, global and cost-effective communications."

Truphone's planned VoIP app will also eventually include converged voice and data services to BlackBerry users over both wifi and 4G/LTE networks, thanks to BlackBerry 10's development-friendly environment. Truphone was founded in 2006 and has developed for iOS, Android (News - Alert), BlackBerry OS and Symbian as well as Windows, taking on Skype's (News - Alert) popular VoIP software.
