IP communications needs to be easy, and D2 Technologies believes it can help.
The elements of mobile IP telephony have been around for several years now, but one barrier to adoption has been ease of use. The need to download client software or an over-the-top app, while easier now than in years past, is still not simple enough. Fortunately, the commercial availability of D2 Technologies’ mCUE 4G Embedded IMS Software Client should make the inclusion of rich communications services (RCS) in various products easier, which in turn will make voice over LTE (News - Alert) (VoLTE) more accessible.
"Subscribers want the 'green button' experience where all rich communications functions, such as Instant Messaging (IM), video calls and easy photo/file/location sharing are native functions of the phone," said Doug Makishima (News - Alert), chief operating officer at D2, regarding the news last month that the company’s embedded software now runs on the Google Nexus 5.
"The only way to truly achieve this fully integrated experience -- and add VoLTE with HD voice -- is with an embedded IMS client such as our mCUE 4G solution," he added.
The mCUE 4G solution is embedded and optimized to provide a fully native user experience that combines rich IP communications modes based on the IR.92 VoLTE, the IR.94 video call and RCS (joyn) standards with legacy CS voice and SMS.
Both consumers and device manufacturers stand to benefit from mCUE, and several applications of the embedded client were on display at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month.
In addition to a demo on the Google (News - Alert) Nexus 5, the software was also showcased on a Huawei Ascend G716-L070, Nvidia's Tegra 4i reference platform and an Intel Atom based commercial handset.
GCT Semiconductor (News - Alert), which supplies advanced 4G mobile semiconductor solutions, showed that D2's vPort 4G+ IMS software could be combined with GCT's GDM7243S 4G LTE mobile chipset to enable VoLTE and IR.94 IP video call functionality for mobile and machine to machine (M2M) devices.
Altair Semiconductor also has partnered with D2, along with M/A-COM Technology Solutions (News - Alert), on the ASL-14331M LTE gateway developed by Alpha Networks, which shows off the D2 embedded client and offers broadband Internet connectivity. The 14331M LTE gateway enables VoLTE and smart-home functionality, allowing for remote control and monitoring of various appliances and sensors in the home.
"This exciting product, which extends LTE Internet connectivity to the home-control domain, demonstrates the types of innovation users can expect to see as the Internet of Things (IoT) becomes a reality," said Eran Eshed, co-founder and VP of marketing and business development at Altair.
D2 and others are showing that in very short order, rich communication is something that people will just do; they won’t have to think about how they are going to do it.
