Voice over LTE (News - Alert) (VoLTE) is an advanced technology that enables carriers to offer high quality data, multimedia and voice services to their users. The service is gaining popularity in developing countries like India where a significant portion of the population is not supported by wired infrastructure.
According to Arc Chart research, the number of VoLTE users worldwide is expected to reach 74 million by 2016. The market is primarily driven by the transition from circuit-based to IP-based voice and the continued deployment of LTE data networks.
Many carriers are adopting 4G VoLTE over traditional DSL landline networks because it offers a lower cost per subscriber and lower maintenance costs.
In one of the recent developments in the industry, TranSwitch (News - Alert) Corporation, a provider of semiconductor solutions for the telecommunications and electronics market, announced it has been selected by Rancore Technologies, the technology and development arm of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL).
TranSwitch’s Atlanta 80 processor will support multiple services and applications including high-speed data and Voice over LTE (VoLTE) at Rancore’s new analog terminal adaptor (ATA), optimized for Reliance Jio Infocomm’s upcoming 4G LTE Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) network.
By leveraging Atlanta 80 communications processor and VoLTE software, Rancore’s equipment will be able to deliver simultaneous high-speed Internet and quality voice service to enable a superior user experience, company officials said.
Voice over LTE got a boost in India recently when India’s Telecom Commission allowed BWA spectrum holders to set up voice services. Since then leading telecom providers in the country have announced plans to deliver VoLTE. Bharti Airtel (News - Alert) has already launched LTE service in multiple telecom circles. RJIL is the only company with a pan-India BWA license, providing access to all 22 telecom circles in the country.
Tim Blanke, vice president of sales and marketing at TranSwitch, said, “Through close collaboration with Rancore, our Atlanta 80 communication solutions are enabling a high performance 4G LTE ATA that will deliver multiple, simultaneous services without loss of performance. We are very pleased to be working with Rancore and look forward to supporting the RJIL VoLTE rollout in India.”
